While we're on the topic of no-tax pledges (as the second section of this week's column is) I think Congressional candidate Ricky Gill is making the same mistake Leroy Ornellas did in jumping aboard the no-tax pledge.
There’s a lot to like about Gill, a young and promising Republican looking to unseat Democratic Rep. Jerry McNerney in a district that will include Mountain House and Tracy north of Interstate 205. But signing onto the no new tax pledge seems sadly run-of-the-mill.
Governing is about the art of the possible, and sometimes securing the general welfare means compromise — possibly even accepting that raising revenue is equally as valid a solution to budget problems as cutting costs.
But insisting everything must either reduce revenue or be revenue neutral seems to cut out a wide swath of middle ground.

The choices made Nov 6 will determine the state's course for years. Both Prop 32, 30 levy significant taxes on Californians.
The wounds that Prop 30, 32 are to heal have been self inflicted largely by elected officials in Sacramento who simply do not say no to any influential interest group (lobbyists) be they public employees, business, teachers or other unions or environmental groups.
And now the Sacramento politicians and their lobbyists are using Prop 32, 30, 38 to blackmail us.
Vote! Vote No on Prop 32, 30, 38. Save California for our children.
Yes Politicians do not surprise me any more. I just moved from New Jersey to California, No surprise politicians seem to be same over there and hear with “Arrogance Superseding Stupidity” they are not believing talking to each other or compromising. The other thing is that we have lobbyist that are biggest enemy of our country and sad thing is we are paying for it!
